The Leytenos must be very happy as they are now riding with the wave of the call center boom in the Philippines. Thanks to APAC Customer Services Inc. officially opened its doors to the local employment just recently.
The new P200M Apac facility was inaugurated by Apac CEO Michael Marrow, VP Doug Almond and US Embassy Consul for Commercial Affairs Patrick Wall in the town of Palo which is some 99 km away from Ormoc. Apac launch its first call with client Medco during the inauguration which was attended by Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla, who has been actively marketing Leyte as an investment site for BPOs as well as information and communication technology (ICT).
“I am proud that Apac has chosen Leyte as the location for its fourth site [in the Philippines],” GovernorPetilla said. “This is a great opportunity for us to raise our economy.” Leyte’s economy is still reliant on agriculture, a reason its poverty incidence remains high.
Apac’s P200-million investment on a 3,000-sq-m site in Leyte was the result of its meeting with President Arroyo in New York in June last year.
Almond said this is part of tApac’s aggressive five-year expansion plans in the Philippines. He said they chose Leyte because it has all the critical elements required for a successful expansion, many of which have not been taken advantage of. This includes a good road network, a solid but underutilized ICT infrastructure and a deep talent pool. The province has 22 universities and colleges that produce 6,000 graduates every year.
“It also helped that there is a strong fiber-optic backbone in the province,” Almond said, adding they are confident in the new contact center despite the global economic crisis. He further added that their client base, which are in fields like health care and publishing, are not affected by the crisis in the same way as those of other BPO companies. Apac look at the economic downturn as an opportunity rather than a stumbling block.
Based in Illinois, Apac is a global leader in integrated customer-care and acquisition services. It is a leading provider of solutions for Fortune 500 market leaders in health care, financial services, business services, publishing, travel and hospitality, entertainment and communications.
Apac is publicly listed in Nasdaq with nearly 35 years of experience and more than 8,300 professional contact-management employees across the US and the Philippines. In addition to its customer call- management sites, Apac also has a growing “atHOMETM” program which allows some of their employees to work from home while serving the customer-care requirements of their clients.
